Tim Martin: Saw Player Extraordinaire

Tim Martin is one of the best saw players in the US and the world. He lives in Ormond Beach, Florida. Ten years ago he saw a friend playing the saw with a screwdriver and the rest is history. He taught himself to play by watching YouTube videos, and last year, he was one of the top two winners in the International Musical Saw Association contest. He has a wonderful technique, and I think you can learn a lot by watching him. He always looks relaxed when he plays. In this video you can hear him playing a saw designed by Eric Jon Johnson, a saw craftsman who lives in California. Tim plays a variety of music, from folk to classical. He can do it all.

In this video Tim is playing “The Devil’s Trill” by Tartini. Supposedly, Tartini wrote the piece after having a dream in which he made a pact with the devil. This melody is beautiful. Maybe pacts with the devil shouldn’t get such a bad rap.

And Tim playing Chopin’s Nocturne in C# Minor. Beautiful!

Here is Tim in the IMSA competition. Go Tim!

You can follow Tim on Facebook to see all the places he plays and get news about upcoming performances. His page is “The Sawman”.
