Just A Closer Walk

The musical saw is a great instrument for hymns. The saw has always been a popular instrument in churches because they are inexpensive and can be carried from place to place. Many an itinerant preacher traveled with a saw. Church music is part of the history of the musical saw.

Here is a nice rendition of “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” a hymn that’s probably been around since the Civil War. It’s a beautiful song that’s been recorded by everyone from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Willie Nelson. The saw player here is Verlan Jesse, who put out a beautiful cd titled Hand Saw Hymns. Enjoy!
